Peñíscola, “The Seaside Town”
The town of Peñíscola is one of the most important holiday resorts on the Spanish Mediterranean coast today. It is located 150km from Valencia and 200km from Barcelona, very well connected by road via the AP-7 motorway and the N-340 main road, and by air through the airports of Reus, Valencia, Barcelona and soon Castellón. The castle, built by the Templars in the 13th century and the stronghold of Benedict XIII, the papal pretender known in Spain as “Papa Luna”, is a major attraction for all visitors to this town, which also has a strong seafaring tradition. Its fine location, close to the Irta and Maestrazgo mountains, offers countless possibilities of routes leading to different towns and villages to discover the sites, food and drink and culture of the Baix Maestrat area. Its nearness to important places like Valencia, Barcelona and Tarragona, to Port Aventura in Salou (90km), to the Ebro Delta (45km), to the Sant Jordi golf course (15km) or to the underground river in Vall d’Uixó (80km), together with its benign climate, the quality of its water and its outstanding beaches, make Peñíscola an excellent choice at any time of year.
